Abdominoplasty

What it is

Abdominoplasty removes excess abdominal skin and repairs the separation of the abdominal muscles that often follows pregnancy or significant weight loss. It addresses what exercise cannot reach: skin that has lost its elasticity, and a muscle wall that has widened.

What to expect

Dr. Sibaja will tell you whether your concern is skin, muscle separation, fat or a combination, because each needs a different procedure and the three are frequently confused. She also discusses timing — the procedure is usually advised once you have finished having children and your weight has been stable.

Every answer is a starting point — your consultation goes deeper, personally.

What does it correct that exercise cannot?
Skin that has lost its elasticity, and separation of the abdominal muscles after pregnancy or major weight loss. Neither responds to training, which is why a strong core can still sit behind a loose abdominal wall.
Is my problem skin, muscle or fat?
That is the question the consultation exists to answer, and the three are frequently confused. Fat alone may need liposuction; muscle separation needs repair; loose skin needs excision. The wrong procedure produces a disappointing result even when performed well.
What is a mini versus a full abdominoplasty?
A mini addresses the area below the navel only and suits limited laxity; a full addresses the whole abdominal wall and repositions the navel. Which applies depends on your anatomy, not your preference.
When is the right time to have it?
Usually once you have finished having children and your weight has been stable for a period. Pregnancy after abdominoplasty can undo the muscle repair, and significant weight change alters the result.
Where is the scar and how long is it?
Low across the abdomen, positioned to sit below underwear or a swimsuit line. It is a long scar and it is permanent — that trade is the central decision of this operation, and it should be made with clear eyes.
What is recovery honestly like?
This is the most demanding recovery of the procedures here. Expect restricted movement, a garment, drains in some cases, and several weeks before normal activity. Plan the time properly rather than hoping for the best case.
Will it remove stretch marks?
Those on the skin that is removed go with it — typically the lower abdomen. Stretch marks above the navel generally remain. Dr. Sibaja will show you which of yours fall where.
Can liposuction be done at the same time?
Frequently, to refine the flanks and waist so the result is a contour rather than just a flatter front. Whether it is safe to combine in one session depends on the extent of both.
